Skin-to-skin contact, shushing mimics the sound of the blood rushing Mama’s body so is soothing, one burp doesn’t mean the baby isn’t still gassy, movement is also soothing since they were moving with Mama.

My first 6 months as a new Dad were a blur because my son didn't want to sleep. Things that worked for me:

Putting him in the car seat and just driving would zonk him out. It was then I realized that low droning sounds lulled him off. Put him on my shoulder while slowly walking around the apartment with a hair dryer set on high (nice white noise) would put him to sleep. Not as quick as the car, but it would work in less than 10 minutes.

That led to this, which is my ultimate baby-sleeper move that has worked on both kids and my grandkids. I now have the reputation (in my family) of being able to take a cranky kid and have them asleep in less than two minutes flat. Here's how I do it:

Hold them against you so their head is over your shoulder and they are facing behind you. Your shoulder will become a pillow when they fall asleep. Go into a dark room. Relax. Breathe. Forget your tension. Forget the day. Forget the frustration. Remember you are the world to this little person, and they take their cues from you. If you are not relaxed, they will not be relaxed. Listen to your own heartbeat. Then lightly start patting their back in that heartbeat rhythm. Pat-pat... Pat-pat... Pat-pat If you have a rocking chair, sit down and rock slowly. Otherwise, slowly walk in a circle in the room. In a very low, very even voice, recite the "This old man, he played one, he played knick-knack on my thumb..." nursery rhyme in time with the pat-pat of your hand. It's important that there is no melody, lilt, or excitement. Just keep your voice even an low so they feel the vibration of your voice as much as hearing it. You are basically creating an ambient soundscape for your baby. Low sounds, no light, movement, and lots of tactile sensation reminiscent of before they were born.

This drove my wife nuts because she'd try for almost an hour, and in 2 minutes with me they were asleep. Best of luck!

Well at least you’ll be used to the loud crying, what with having a husky and all
