I don’t know when empathy became a characteristic of a “sap” but we need to go back to when it was something we claimed was important (at least on the surface).
It's especially sad when people who worked hard to only achieve the bare minimum wants those who don't have it to work for it as well, because they want to feel like it's a proud accomplishment. So imagine when they get thrown into a conversation where the thing that they're most proud of is just a "handout". Of course they're gonna disagree - they don't want their golden medal to turn into a participation medal.
