Nobody seems to acknowledge the massive amount of retirements and early retirements. Many, many people in the manufacturing and trade sectors simply left the market. I know in many plants in my area, it was encouraged and even incentivized. Now there's an even bigger shortage of skilled blue collar labor because for decades companies have all but abandoned on the job training in favor of government subsidized college/trade school educations, a byproduct of 40 years of union busting labor policy. It will be a while before this evens out, and without broadened union membership and other apprenticeship options it will be more painful than necessary.

Not to mention that, in the US at least, the highest deaths per profession were cooks.

Guess which businesses are complaining the most about people not wanting to work there?

My office went from like 100 engineers to 38 and leadership wants to be all “business as usual” and then is all surprised pikachu face when people now want to leave due to burnout or if people are refusing to recruit their friends. Why would I encourage a friend to join when I wish I could be fired so at least I could get benefits?
