A small number of England fans have been criticised for their "disgraceful" cheering when the image of a German girl in tears appeared on the big screen during Tuesday's match.

While others posted sick messages on social media revelling in her tears.

The lack of sensitivity by some supporters towards the Germans during the heated Euro 2020 match at London's Wembley stadium was heavily criticised - a number even jeered during their opponents' national anthem.

England finally beat Germany 2-0, ending 55 years of hurt and leaving the whole country dreaming.

It saw jubilant fans up and down the country celebrating in bars, pubs and squares as the prospect of the football "coming home" becomes more possible.

But some were criticised on Twitter for their "sickening" insensitivity towards some of their German counterparts.

At one point a number of them cheered the image of a little girl in tears as her team's stint in the championship came to an end.

And others posted sick messages on social media revelling in her tears.

Heartbreaking footage shows the girl, clad in a German kit, sobbing as she hugs a relative while Germany's Thomas Muller is replaced after failing to score.

Alastair Campbell, former press secretary to Tony Blair, condemned England fans’ behaviour, tweeting: “Twitter awash with ‘grown men’ jerking off at pic of a young German girl crying, having earlier enjoyed booing the German national anthem.

"Meanwhile German manager, team, German Ambassador and the brilliant @J_Klinsmann showing class which Southgate and @england team emulate.”

He went on to add: “Grace in defeat is a very special quality. Grace in victory ought to be a lot easier.”

People took to Twitter to comment on the fans' lack of respect, with one saying: “I was proud of England winning the match but some of the fans who are hating the Little German Girl who was crying in the stand don’t have humanity or class at all and they should be ashamed.”

Another said: "The little German girl crying cos Germany are losing is the most heartbreaking thing you will see today, Football is more than just a game."

One Tweeter weighed in making a mockery of the fans as she compared them to howler monkeys, who according to a study, see their testicles getting smaller the louder they roar.

People also took to blast England fans for booing German's national anthem.

TV presenter Jeremy Vine said: "Dear Germany, Thank-you for a great game of football last night.

"But I am very sorry we booed your national anthem. That should not have happened; it was embarrassing for our country. Love from England".

NHS doctor Rachel Clarke echoed this as she branded the behaviour "uncivil".

"Who boos the opposing team’s national anthem? Unsporting. Uncivil. Unbelievable. #ENGGER " she said.

The BBC's chief sports writer Phil McNulty, said: "Jeering throughout the Germany national anthem.

I remember chuckling at that shot- Not in a mean spirited way but it reminded me of myself back in '96 when I did the exact same thing and my dad comforting me after that semi-final.

The trolls are disgusting and embarrassing to our country. I sincerely hope that little girl doesn't see any of it.

It would be interesting to find the guy who decided to call her a slut in front of the world and to find out what was going through his head when he wrote and published that.

You could sit him down with her parents and he could try to explain why he thought that that was a reasonable thing to do.
