I like the idea that he sent the second email right as he was about to fall asleep and he bolts awake because he just realized what he sent in the first one
Edit: not all professors are men, it coulda been a she or something entirely different
I used to work w clinicians and one time I had to sign something but later she came back when she realized I had accidentally kept her pen and she jokingly said "does someone have trouble letting go?".
I was like hehe, I thought about that the rest of the week
