• Miramax films are hoping that they have discovered the new Bridget Jones. According to the Hollywood Reporter the studio has bought the feature film rights to newspaper columnist Allison Pearson's upcoming debut novel, I Don't Know How She Does It. The novel, which will be published next year, details the daily life of Kate Reddy, a successful investment banker trying to balance her role as mother with her demanding job.

• David Dobkin, a top adverts and video director, is to direct Shanghai Knights, the sequel to the box office hit, Shanghai Noon. The new film, to be set in turn-of-the-century London, will reteam Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. The pair will uncover a worldwide conspiracy to overthrow the Chinese and British Empires.

• An unlikely saviour played a major role in getting Ben Affleck into an alcohol rehab centre. Reports suggest that Charlie Sheen, one time hell-raiser and drug abuser, was put in touch with Affleck through a mutual friend. Not only did Sheen then help arrange a room for Affleck at Promises, the exclusive rehab centre in Malibu, but he drove him there as well.

• Matrix Reloaded, the sequel to the 1999 worldwide hit, the Matrix, is to be released in May 2003. Variety reports that this is later than was expected.
