For some context the program isn't new. It was made when the cost of tuition was less than 1k where it's over 14 today. Also fuck colleges that screw over my generation.

"The Minnesota Legislature created the program for seniors in 1975, when baby boomers made up most of the college-aged population. A senior citizen at the time could pay just $2 per credit, or about $13 today, but only if there was space in the class after students paying full price had the chance to enroll."

I teach at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (the primary campus in Minneapolis). I've always thought it's terrible how two students can sit in my classroom for the exact same experience while one pays thousands of dollars and the other pays less than the price of lunch at a fast food place.

As an instructor I don't really see much of a difference in terms of administration - I'll grade and provide feedback to each unless a student specifically declares they are auditing the course and they don't take the exams or submit work. But, if they do chose to submit I'll grade it.

The university has already proposed raising tuition by 1.5% next year.
