Apparently there was an old folks home across the street and they had been seeing the tiger for years, but when they told people no one believed them. “Yeah sure grandma, there’s a tiger in the projects”

"secretly living in an apartment" makes it sounds like this tiger managed to infiltrate the human world successfully. Like he just wears a hat and a raincoat when he goes outside to work or do groceries, but he's been quite victorious in adapting!

It gets crazier. The guy also had an alligator in his apartment. Yes, an alligator living in an apartment was so much less crazy than other aspects of the story that it's just a footnote to the story.

Here's another great quote: "A woman who shared a Harlem apartment with a 425-pound tiger said yesterday she was terrified at first—but soon got used to living with the man-eater down the hall. Caroline Domingo told the Daily News she couldn't believe her eyes when she spotted the big cat roaming free in the apartment where she and her husband rented a room from tiger-owner Antoine Yates... But eventually, she said, 'We all became family.'"

Oh, and he lived there with his mother, too, and his mother babysat kids in the same apartment! With the tiger and the alligator!

Oh, and by the way, Michael Jackson was so touched by Yates' story that he helped him get a ranch in Nevada for himself and new large cats.
