Aphids consume plant sap (which contains high amounts of sugars) and once metabolized, they excrete honeydew. The ants love this honeydew and "milk" the aphids in order to get it.

In return, by "milking" them, the ants help clean the aphids' bodies and, more importantly, protect the aphids from other predators and even build "stables" for them.
