It’s amazing how often these opinions come down to personal experience with one of whoever the “minority” group is. My mom used to be very homophobic, then she got a gay man next door. She was very wary. She was having a big cook-out/pool party for my dad’s retirement and, as is prudent in the suburbs to prevent noise complaints she invited Mitch. He declined, but the morning of the party he brought over muffins he had made and said “Here, I figured with getting ready for the party you wouldn’t have time to make breakfast.”. That’s all it took — she loved the gays forever after. Her words: “You know, a straight man would never have been so thoughtful.”
A long time ago, I had a housemate who was a ‘husband lesbian to be.’ She let me ride her motorcycle, could fix anything, took zero shit off anyone. And this was in the olden days (the 90’s) when husband lesbians were not legally allowed to find wife lesbians and have lesbian marriages.
Frankly, if we were the same size I’d have worn her clothes. She know how to wear men’s clothing. Really sharp and fashionable.
We fell out of touch; she was one of those people who just liked to disappear when she was in a relationship. But still, best housemate I ever had.
