When I was a kid, I remember seeing a German shepherd in the back of a pickup. Well guess what, at a stop, the dog saw a rabbit. Lept out of the truck and got hit by another car. I will never forget seeing the dog gasping for air and then taking one long rattling breath. (My mom pulled over and ran over to help, because she's a good human). Still haunts me. Don't do this.

Edit: Dog died. Owner was sobbing. He felt horrible about it, said he'd never repeat the mistake and felt so stupid, so I feel for him. I still remember him hiccuping because he was crying so hard, saying that dog was his best friend. So seriously, just don't. Between seeing the dog dying and the owner having a nervous breakdown, I needed therapy bad after this. I also cried over the dog and tried to run over to help the dog (I was like seven), but thank God my mom grabbed me. My parents said I watched All Dogs Go to Heaven every day for at least a month after that.

I witnessed a wreck involving a truck with dogs in the bed, and now I would never even consider that to be an acceptable place for them. A car t-boned the truck going at least 40 mph, and the dogs went flying. One dog had its back legs paralyzed and was dragging itself with its front legs while shitting uncontrollably. The other dog was scared and full of adrenaline and went sprinting down the on-ramp toward the interstate highway. That dog could have easily caused another more serious wreck, but I have no clue what happened to it. The driver of the truck had to be put on a stretcher with a neck brace, and I can only imagine what it would have been like to get to the hospital and be told that at least one of ur dogs had to be put down. I've also seen several flat-bed trucks with dogs standing on the back looking as if they are struggling to keep their balance, and it just makes me so angry.

I'm convinced that people who do this do not care about their animal at all. Either that or they are literally too stupid and short sighted to consider the very real consequences of doing this. Either way, that dog looks terrified.
