This is a gorgeous picture, but doesn't fully represent the magic of Bagan. There are literally thousands of stone temples built for karma. At the height of the empire, a new temple was started on average every 21 days. The city is calm and beautiful, mostly focused on the tourists coming to see the temples, and most of the action happens at dawn and sunset. On the other hand, the locals live in rather abject poverty, literally surrounded by sand with not tons of access to water, while the british-built golf course is green and lush and surrounded by barbed wire in a particularly grim 'fuck you' to the locals.
