Happened to my little sis. One of our aunts gave her an aquarium with like 10 little goldfish. The car ride to us was really long and rough tho, the aquarium was, in hinsight, obviously to small for that many and they got overfed. Dont know how they expected a 9 year old to take care of them tbh. Was really really sad seeing one of them die every other day.
I bought a $1.00 gold fish in university for my desk. I fully expected that little guy to last a month or two at most. Turns out he wanted to live out his days with me cause he spent 3 years with me until I had to move out west.
Left him with my parents and miraculously he died about 5 days after leaving.
Few years later, after my mother passed away, my dad admitted to flushing the dude so he wouldn’t have to clean the bowl.

Makes me sad that fish are the most frequently abused pets, even if it's not intentional.
