I read that there was a study done where they found that we value a relationship more when they turn from negative to positive. I think it said that it was due to test subjects believing that they had a better understanding of the person.
EDIT: I found the article. It’s called the Gain-Loss Principle. Researches found that as someone’s behavior becomes more favorable to another the other person tends to like them more. This is much more noticeable when both have a poor opinion of the other.
