Eurovision 2021: As it happened

Authored by bbc.co.uk and submitted by tinkafuckingbell

The Eurovision website has a short profile of the winning band, and says they are vocalist Damiano, bassist Victoria, guitarist Thomas and Ethan on drums.

It says they took their band name from the Danish word for moonlight, as a tribute to their bassist Victoria’s home country.

Although they have known each other since middle school, they didn't form the band until 2015. They cite their musical influences as rock, rap, reggae, funk and pop.

The group is already well established in Italy, releasing two singles and their first chart-topping studio album Il ballo della vita in 2018.

Two years ago they sold out 66 gigs and with 140,000 tickets for shows in Italy and across Europe.

The Eurovision website's page also has a translation of the winning song's lyrics, which has a chorus:

I'm out of my mind, but different from them/ And you are out of your mind, but different from them/ We are out of our minds, but different from them.

The thing is, Eurovision is all about the weirdness and going full theatrical mode with panto style characters. Look at the majority of the winners and memorable contestants through the years. Then look at us. We just had some chunky bloke singing off key to a generic dance beat that you’d hear every second song on Capital FM.

I like to think of it like cheese. Every country has their own special cheese that is memorable in some way. Some are extra pungent, some are loaded with flavour. Then you have us, the slice of square cheese you get at the bottom of a Rustlers burger that you can never quite taste, or even realise is there. And that you’re sure isn’t really cheese at all and is more rubber than anything.

I think we should just enter more interesting acts. Our entrants are always so bland and forgettable. Give it to PC Music and let AG Cook or Hannah Diamond or whoever have a bash. It might not win, but at least it'll be interesting and memorable. Alternatively, give it to some mediocre rock band and hoover up those votes. Rock bands always seem to do quite well based on the fact there's only usually one or two of them, so they corner the market.
