I go to Japan annually, and let me tell you; their train safety makes a Christian daycare look like the trenches of Somme.

Here are some examples that I’ve seen:

Live tracking of trains so that you know when and where a train is at all times.

PA system that warns people of approaching trains.

Walls and gates which make it impossible to fall onto the tracks.

Bright yellow, tactile paving for visually impaired people. (Japan is the one who first started using them.)

Trackside gutters for people to fall into in case anyone falls at all.

A officer or conductor situated every few cars apart on the platform.

Police officers and medical staff on standby in case something non-train-related happens.

Cameras to watch the tracks and make sure they’re always cleared.

Offshoot tracks to quickly divert the course of a train in the case of an emergency.

Emergency panic buttons every 10 meters to immediately halt and redirect any oncoming trains and call for security and support.

Conductors are equipped with a long collapsible claw to fetch anything that someone may have dropped on the tracks from the safety of the platform.

Smoking chambers to keep harmful fumes away from children and infants.

Pleasant ambient bird sounds which will always fool you into thinking there’re birds in the station. (This is by far the most important feature.)

You’d need to really try if you wanted to get hit by a train.
