I think that a lot of people have dickheads in their life but because most of us have relationships that are generally unserious they've never had an opportunity to see how deep the dickheadedness ran. You don't often gets to see your friends tested in an unvarnished manner. Either they helped everyone or they didn't care enough to.
This last year gave everyone a chance to see what type of people we are when things actually matter. Turns out lots of people are lacking character.
Was at a store today talking with my wife about the good old days of blissful ignorance of the selfishness and idiocy of so many of the people around us. It's just too hard to ignore today when people signal that they don't care about their neighbors from across the room.

I feel like this is a much more generous phrasing than I would use.
People will allow others to suffer significantly if it means having to make minor compromises or enduring a slight inconvenience.
