Oh, my heart. I'm so glad she survived, she is an extra good doggo, the actual bestest doggo.

My boxer-pitbull dog saved my baby nephew from a copperhead in our yard. She took the bite instead and suffered through the intense pain like a champ.

I learned something cool about dogs from that fiasco:

Their muscles are specially built to lock down venom by contracting, slowing down the spread of the venom and giving their body time to create antibodies.

The bite was terrifyingly bad, but it would have definitely killed my baby nephew. She saved his life.

Not quite an attack on a bear, but my dog once earned his hero status. He and the old lady next door were the best of friends. She’d reach over the fence everyday to pet him and bring him treats. In return, he’d alert her anytime anyone he did not know (including her adult son or her professional gardeners) was in her yard.

One day, she came over for her daily chat with him. She decided it was time to head inside and he started barking up a storm. She realized he was trying to alert her to something, since it was the same bark he used when strangers were around. She turned to see what he was staring at when she saw some movement in the window of her shed. She said it scared her half to death.

Turns out that Snowball, the giant fluffy white dog who lived down the street and had been missing for a few days and who also couldn’t bark for medical reasons, was locked in the shed. He was jumping up and down in the shed trying to get her attention and Charlie noticed and let her know.

He was reunited with his owners. The vet said he was dehydrated but would be fine. He probably wouldn’t have been fine without water if he’d gone much longer. The dog went missing the same day the gardener had last stopped by, and the neighbor guessed Snowball snuck in while the gardener was over, since he was the only one who went into the shed regularly. It would have been 4 more days before he had come back and the dog certainly wouldn’t have survived that long.

My dog Charlie continued to be best friends with her until we moved. She called him her hero dog.
