I don’t remember exactly but I remember hearing a podcast talk about how Michael Collins was aware that if something went wrong, he’d have to leave them behind and go home without them. It was apparently very psychologically challenging for him. I hear people talk about astronauts being heroes, and my ignorant self used to think “what they were doing was cool and they didn’t go to war!” Now that I’m older, I realize how terrifying and dangerous it was for them. True heroes for the sake of science.
