It is considered almost a standard that police candidates in Ontario have a 4 year university degree, and are usually no younger than 25, married, and with extensive volunteer records. Life experience is the key.

Not only does education expand your mind, but living away from home, surrounded by people from different walks of life is bound to give you life experience that you may not have gotten in your community otherwise.

Obviously policing in Canada isn’t perfect, but police shootings are generally more rare than our neighbours to the south (although there are obviously more reasons than just this)

It would be really interesting to see a data analysis of different basic requirements to be a police officer compared to the number of police misconduct incidents. It seems logical that there would be a correlation between stricter requirements and fewer incidents, but it would be interesting to see the data.
