Why would people tell them not to get married?

Sure, Down Syndrome folks can suffer from a number of potential health issues, but even if so, they deserve happiness too, and deserve to share it with someone.

I don't have Down Syndrome but I was born with another condition called Moebius Syndrome. I have a deformed face, hands and feet but I am 100% fully capable of taking care of myself.

My parents never managed to push past their own guilt and sorrows, so they raised me to believe there was no place for me in the outside world. "Men will just use you for sex, people will treat you badly". Every time I tried to find some sort of hope for my future, I was told I should stay home with them where it was 'safe'.

I cannot speak for others, but in my experiences, my parents didn't think it was possible for society to accept and embrace me. It would be too much of a struggle for me to build a normal life.

The thing about disabled folks is that we are often treated like children that need protecting from the dangers of this world. It might be possible that many people view two disabled folks getting married in a similar way as how they feel at the thought of two 12 year olds pairing up and setting out on their own.

They view us as fragile and unable to build and sustain our own lives.
