My grandpa was a German WWII vet who later immigrated to America. Whenever I was asked as a little kid if I knew any veterans, I had a feeling that they didn't mean veterans like him... He went through some bad shit. Was drafted at 17 or 18, ended up living through the firebombing of Dresden. He had shrapnel in his leg his entire life. Was a POW of the Russians until he jumped off a moving train to escape and walked back home. Everything his family used to have was lost. So he went to America after marrying my grandma. He rarely talked about the war. I think he just wanted it to be behind him. He always rejected Nazism and right-wing extremism and was a fairly progressive guy.
