I don't understand why this is a gendered thing in some places. In Canada, whoever gets to the door first holds it open for the next person, regardless of gender. It's just common courtesy.
I (f) hold doors for people coming up behind me. I'll thank anyone who holds a door for me. But when a person holds a door and expects me (short) to walk under their armpit, I'll say, "After you."
