This is the guaranteed result of smacking a cactus; every time. It's even less fun when it's not you doing the smacking. When I was on a Boy Scout trip (many moons ago) one of the other kids smacked, baseball bat style, a cholla cactus piece into my shoulder from 20 ft away.
BTW, cactus can be decent too. Prickly pears are delicious, just don't get any of the tiny, nearly invisible, spines in your tongue.
