Once, when I was younger, my family came home to a pile of our household items stacked outside the door. We weren’t sure if the people who had broken into our house were still there, so my dad went around the side of the house after grabbing a shovel from the yard, and my mom called the cops. When they arrived with assault rifles drawn, my mom, who is white, started yelling hysterically, “My husband is behind the house. He’s Hispanic! He’s Hispanic!”.
It was only years later that I understood why it was so important to her to tell them my dad’s race.
