The eastern US actually has the most salamanders in the world. They are the Appalachians’ biological claim to fame.

I did research at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC on salamander species.

Sadly, amphibians as a whole are being devastated by a pathogen called Chytrid Fungus that attacks peptides in their skin.

In terms of loss of biodiversity, it is the worst pathogen ever known and blamed for the extinction of as many as 500 species in the last half century.

EDIT: While people are paying attention, DISINFECT YOUR GEAR!!!

One of the ways we think it’s is getting spread is by being carried on fishermen/hunters waders and gear, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, etc from one place to another. Spraying your stuff down with a 10% bleach solution and a quick wipe help mitigate this.
