He still didnt want to stress over this thing and the fact that, in this scenerio hes a good man and takes care of his family, doesn't mean you didnt thrust more stress onto this persons life directly against their wishes.
Responsibilities aside, its also because they know they will love the dog and will likely outlive the dog. They dont want to feel the inevitable grief that will come when the dog passes away. And they may not want the kids to experience that grief either.
