There is a great book by Marianna Mazzucato called “The Entrepreneurial State”. She details three very important facts about Pharmaceutical Companies:
1) 90% of the “new-compound” medications are developed by public funding through the NIH and other government agencies 2) Most Pharmaceutical R&D goes towards “me-too” compounds to develop a modification of existing medication 3) Over the last 10 years, Pharmaceutical Companies spent more money on Stock Buybacks than on R&D, and spending on advertising is significantly higher than spending on R&D
How much did insulin cost big pharma to research, again? That medication that Canada unleashed upon the world without the ever so precious patent in the hopes of saving lives...
