Earlier this month, Joe Rogan confirmed that Spotify had removed “a few episodes” as a condition of their $100 million multi-year deal. That appears to be a slight understatement.
So how much is “a few,” exactly? According to a tally compiled by longtime Rogan followers, Spotify scrubbed at least 40 episodes from The Joe Rogan Experience as part of its $100 million exclusive deal with the podcaster (we also double-checked the tally and indeed found the episodes missing). Those episodes aren’t available on Spotify currently, and never made it onto the platform.
Almost immediately after Spotify started transitioning episodes, a number of Rogan followers discovered some glaring omissions. At first, fans noticed that interviews with more controversial guests like Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos were omitted, though neither Spotify nor Rogan offered any comment on the matter.
Confusing matters is that Spotify didn’t transfer every episode at the same time, instead transitioning the catalog in chunks while also deleting copies on other platforms. That meant that some episodes thought to be missing were simply in the process of being transferred. Even Alex Jones gave Spotify the benefit of the doubt, and pointed to transitional delays as the reason for his missing interviews with Rogan (Jones’ original interviews with Rogan are still missing from the platform and will likely never appear).
Spotify didn’t explain why they deleted the long list of episodes below, though earlier this month, Rogan confirmed that Spotify intentionally removed the shows. “There were a few episodes they didn’t want on their platform, and I was like ‘okay, I don’t care’,” Rogan shared in an interview with comedian Fahim Anwar. Whether Rogan understood that several dozen shows were being removed is also unclear.
As for the list, these are 40 titles we’ve confirmed as missing.
And given that Spotify has also had the episodes removed from other platforms like YouTube and Apple Podcasts as part of their exclusive arrangement, fans may have difficulty finding them.
