Why is this even a question? Does anyone actually give a fuck about mega-churches?? How about, if it has to be described as "mega", we tax that shit. I'd go as far to say they should be taxed more, depending on how mega it is.
What if organizations can only qualify for a public subsidy, including tax exemption, if their detailed accounts are made public every month?
Can’t afford an accountant? The IRS has a special no-cost-to-you team for this public accounting (I.e ongoing audit).
Don’t want John Public all up in your grill? Just pay the corporate tax rate like every other organization and enjoy financial privacy like every other organization.
What I would be in favor of is churches doing a tax return that demonstrates their using the money they receive from patrons being returned to their community via charity or other community investment. That’s what all these churches say they do with the money, why not just audit that and if they are not spending the money on their communities, tax the crap out of them!
