She's a really tough kid. I'm not trying to minimize or mitigate what happened, though. Trust me, I've seen her on her worst days when either we talk about it or something else happens. But on the day it happened, she had no other family that came to the hospital except her grandparents. No aunts, uncles, no one. I only found out because the nurse or whoever said I was on his emergency contact list.

And when I got there, she sat in my lap almost all night crying and didn't want to let go of me. I think that's when I knew I needed to do something, because I was mainly scared of her ending up in the foster system. But I've also made clear to her that I'm not her father and that I'm not trying to replace what she lost in any way

As a grown man who lost his father at 18. I can not express how much it means to have my dad's best friend be in my life. I needed it so badly. I can't imagine how much she needed it. The most respect to you sir!
