I used to think our apartments had thick walls until one morning when I didn’t have music playing I heard a neighbor lightly clear their throat, clear as day. I learned I was the loud neighbor that day and changed my ways

Some nights I hear the dad next door to my bedroom reading to his young son. He uses great inflection, excitement and emotion in his voice. So far, I’ve heard Spider-Man, Captain Hook and Batman.

Other nights, he yells at the kid to go to sleep.

My upstairs neighbor was my landlady. She was mid 40s and we were newlyweds in our first suite. Often her boyfriend would come over and they'd start to have a good time. That was fine til things got hot and heavy and then she'd start yelling his name during the tango. Not a little cry of heavenly delight, but an all out blood curdling scream "JACQUE! JACQUE! JACQUE! JACQUE! JAAAAAAAAAAACQUE!"

It's really hard to make eye contact with your landlady in the laundry room when she and JACQUE! nearly pounded through your ceiling half an hour before. She was also mystified how we knew her boyfriend's name (!?!)

That was 38 years ago. JACQUE! is probably 80 now, and Im still trying to be half the man that he once was.
