I graduated with a girl who had perfect attendance all through school. 13 years (12 & Kindergarten) with not one day missed.

She bragged about coming when she was sick, when she had strep, when she had the flu, etc.

Attendance records send the wrong message.

Pretty much all the schools I've ever gone to had some kind of reward system for attendance and I never got any due to medical issues I have and one time when I was in 4th grade the school I was at tried to suspend me for my lazy eye. I have Marcus Gunn Jaw winking syndrome so when my jaw moves like when I eat something my right eye opens and the school said it was inappropriate to be winking at other students during lunch even though they were fully aware of my lazy eye

I was a teacher for 32 years and attendance awards became my hill to die on. I taught primarily 5-7 year old students and their attendance was entirely out of their control. Citizenship, penmanship, spelling, kindness, you name it, I would get behind that award. But attendance awards meant two things: kids crying because they didn't mean to get sick that one time, and kids crying and coming to school very sick because their parents wanted to make sure they got their award.
