When I grew up, we had keys to the houses of our neighbor on the left and the neighbor two doors down on the left. They both had keys to ours as well.

I thought that was normal. The next door neighbors' place was a cabin, and my parents would mow their lawn sometimes, we'd go check their place after storms, in the winter, and stuff like that. Once when our water pump failed and we couldn't get someone out for days, they offered us the use of their bathrooms and water until we got it fixed. They weren't around. Just told us to use our key and help ourselves.

The neighbors two doors down were two older. They'd always pay me and my brothers for doing small chores. Sometimes they'd just invite us in for snacks.

Same with the neighbor on the right. It was an older couple (like 70s-80s) whose family all lived an hour or more away, and me and my brothers would do a bunch of yard work and chores for them as well. In return, the lady would bring us hot chocolate or lemonade and cookies.

It was just normal. It was only when I was older that I realized most people had a much different experience with neighbors.

Nice people. My ex gf was Romanian. Probably still is actually.

Telling this because they’re Romanian. In 2015 I went through some shit in life and decided to hitchhike from the Midwest to California while I was young. One of my ride’s was from a Love’s in Gallup, NM to Phoenix. A guy was standing with a cardboard sign asking for $20 for gas money in front of an RV as I was standing at the exit looking for a ride. I told him I could fill his tank now and again when we got there if he gave me and my dog a ride to ASU. He clearly didn’t speak English and was just shaking his head saying “no sorry”. I go back to my spot and like 15 or so minutes later a woman comes up and asks if I needed a ride and that her and her husband had the RV. She explained her husband didn’t understand and that they are Romanian. In addition to giving me and my husky a ride, they didn’t take any of my money and also gave me a gift card for a Subway inside the station to eat before we left. We didn’t really talk on the way but the husband video chatted his brother and showed me to him lol.

Now these are the only two stories I know if modern Romanians. I just never hear about them.
