This place looks cool from afar, but is nothing more than a massive vanity project by Nursultan Nazarbayev, who led the country for nearly 30 years between Kazakhstan leaving the Soviet Union in 1990 til his resignation in 2019.

It’s a more central location than the old capital/largest city, Almaty, but its grand structures and high rent aren’t able to facilitate a large urban population. The place isn’t a ghost town by any means, but it’s eerily quiet looking.

If you want to know how much of a vanity project this city really is, after Nursultan Nazarbayev’s resignation, the Kazakh parliament changed its name from Astana to Nur-Sultan.
