So to review: this mentally unstable guy could not handle his own sexual frustrations, grew up in a society that enforces the idea that a man’s value comes through traditional notions of masculinity such as “toughness” and his sexual “conquests,” which normalizes hyper-masculine obsessions with gun culture and sex so that they are not seen as problems to treat, and treatment, if sought, is prohibitively expensive and often sub-par, so he turned to his religion for guidance which enforced the sexist projection of his frustrations onto women as the sources of his temptation, he particularized his obsession towards Asian women who are often sexualized on racial grounds, which leads to female east Asian immigrants from poor backgrounds finding that playing into this sexualized racism by working at massage parlors- whether part of the sex trade or not- is one of the most lucrative opportunities they have available to pay for out-of-control medical and housing expenses in a state where the $7.25/hr minimum wage for a full-time job barely covers the average rent for an apartment in Atlanta.
Which all just sets the stage for this messed up guy to buy a gun with no waiting period, no need for a mental health evaluation, and no license required, then go shoot up three massage parlors that same day, get his story sanitized by a sheriff who has previously supported racially charged comments about an ongoing pandemic which were inspired by the former President, while all of these factors are minimized by a major political party that doesn’t want to address any single one of them and will even go so far as to derail a hearing on the recent surge of anti-Asian violence to yell about communists and glorify lynching because aside from not really caring about Asians or Asian Americans, they want to be able to harness anti-Asian racism for their own anti-CCP talking points, and they know that acknowledging the extent of racism against Asians and Asian-Americans puts a major hole in their “model minority” narrative in which they use a selective and warped narrative about the Asian experience in America as a way of disregarding racism against other minority groups, and throughout all of this, they want people to believe that none of the above poses anything near the risk of a publisher discontinuing a children’s book that refers to people who “wear their eyes in slants.”
In the meantime the only ones in the media-sphere who are willing to call out those people are still only pointing out some of these problems when it suits them and they seem more concerned with acting like anti-Asian racism originated with Trump speeches in 2020, with perhaps the most meaningful take by someone other than a member of the Asian American community being that of a late night comedy host from South Africa who films his show in a living room because of our botched response to a worldwide pandemic that we were told would disappear 12 months ago by a president who insisted on using terms like “China Virus” and “Kung Flu” even after he was made aware of how they stoked anti-Asian racism throughout the country while the Asian American community has had to plead and scream into the void for people to just show some basic human sympathy for them during this painful time.
Gee, it’s almost like we have some deep-rooted problems that we ignore at our own peril as our societal travesties repeatedly culminate in tragedies in a great cycle of pain and suffering.
