Perhaps the main problem is the google results and facebook news are tailored to you so you can end up in an echo chamber particularly if you don't have a clue about how to verify reputable news sources

It’s true. Finding good information is a skill, that not everyone just magically has as soon as they sit down in front of a Google machine. There’s all this talk about librarians becoming obsolete now that we have the internet and it’s just not true. These people go to school for years and get advanced degrees just to help you find good information for your research project or whatever.

Online commenters who are adept at finding good sources of info are actually helping their communities by sharing what they are able to find
