In a new study, researchers found that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana, stays in breast milk for up to six weeks.
The finding supports recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine to abstain from marijuana use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Updated guidance on the importance of avoiding marijuana during pregnancy.
This is the first study examining THC in breastmilk and plasma among women who used marijuana during pregnancy since 1982.
Experts say the updated findings will be helpful in advising new mothers at a time when marijuana is more potent and more widely used.
“With the increasing utilization of marijuana in society as a whole, we are seeing more mothers who use marijuana during pregnancy,” said Children’s Colorado neonatologist Erica Wymore, MD, MPH.
Seven of these women were ultimately able to abstain from marijuana use for the duration of the study. »
