We added our own coin using a rock close by and carried on our way

My first thought was something to do with wishes, but google also says

'According to beliefs that date back to the beginning of the 18th century, one could rid herself of an illness by sticking a coin into a wishing tree so that the tree would assume the illness. If a person pulled one of the wishing tree's coins out, he would become ill.'

So could be either, or both

Yeh we have a whole fallen tree near where I live in Bolton abbey where people stick coins into it. There’s honestly hundreds of them
