It has always been that celebrities have been put forward as political candidates. Everyone from generals to pioneering pilots to business leaders to actors. It's because the single most expensive and complicated part of becoming a candidate is becoming known to voters.

That's what the vast majority of money for challengers go for. Just making the name matter as well as the (R) or (D) after the name. In times when polarization isn't quite so high, that matter a lot. Even in a time like this when polarization is high, the quality of candidate matter as much or more than party affiliation. But, how is the average person supposed to know that?

The big advantage a celebrity has is that people already know their names and people already have an opinion of them. It's way easier with that issue being pre-cleared. You can spend all that "get to know you" money can be put to issues or trying to change people's opinions of the other guy instead.
