We were once visiting a friend’s parents. When they gave us directions back to the hotel, they said a certain part would be dark and to be careful. Having grown up in New England, we both immediately assumed no streetlights and deer. They meant black people. It broke my heart.

Got promoted to a Walgreens in Birmingham AL's west end (Princeton ave for those who know) and everyone told how bad it'd be. Never met nicer people. Folks just wanted to work, raise their kids, and be left alone. I miss working there all the time.

Grew up on the “good side” of town (see: white) and everyone talked about how dangerous the central/north side of the city was and how they would NEVER go there.

Man my grandma lived on that side of town. Those were the nicest streets to play on as a kid. It was literally just another middle class suburb with more brown people in it. I felt safer there than I did next door to these HOA white ladies always threatening to call the cops at the slightest noise.
