Just like in Canada, they fucked generations of first nations people by separating them, demeaning them and pushing them into impoverishment. Now people think they are crying about land and rights when so much more was taken away. It's not taught enough in schools, the cycle continues.

Many of my tribal elders would never speak of what happened to them at these border schools where the motto was “kill the Indian, save the man”. I recently saw a list of the dozens of children that had died at these schools who were stolen from their families. It was by policy to send the kids as far from any family as possible so the family couldn’t visit or the kids try and escape to be reunited with loved ones. Probably thousands of indigenous kids died alone in a foreign place with no family. Often times they couldn’t even speak the language of anyone at the schools when they arrived. It makes me so sick to even think about it. The historical trauma that this caused is still largely unresolved for my family and tribal community. This is true for most indigenous communities in the U.S. Though, we’re no victims, we’re still here and we will push forward as proud, strong people. They tried to stop us, and keep trying to this day at some levels, but they won’t succeed.

so rare to have that many kids in one place without any of them smiling, however bad they said it was. It was probably much worse
