I've known this story for quite a long time and could never get over the fact that he invited her to multiple conventions in a row just so she would have a reason to keep going and she attended every one for a total of 18 events and then ghosted the poor man for 8 years.
Context: It's from an interview. The full story is longer--he sees her at several conventions and each time, he tells her he hopes to see her at the next one, essentially giving her something to live for while she pulls out of a depressive episode. I think she got an engineering degree eventually and wrote to him to thank him.
