On Peace Day 2013, 9000 silhouettes of soldiers were etched into the sand on Normandy beach. This was to commemorate the fallen from D-Day WWII. It only lasted a few hours till the tide came in.

My granddad was there on the 2and wave. Did a report on it/him for school. The stories he told me were horrifying. Dudes coming up out of the surf using their dead friends corpses as literal meat shields from machine gun fire. The stuff of nightmares.
