Why the hell did he pay the bill? If I get a life-ending bill from somebody I'm not paying it, I'm calling them.

I worked for a community service org back in college. They paid heating bills for low-income indigenous people. They would get these insane high bills, and the org would pay the bill and then go in and do weatherproofing to bring down the bills to manageable levels. Some of the people lived with holes in the roof they couldn’t afford to patch, cracks that you could see through in the walls and around windows where the wood rotted. One guy was living in a converted chicken coop. A fucking chicken coop. That guy was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. He said it was “not that bad.”

The sad part is, some of the people didn’t have power at all; they used wood-burning stoves. I’ll never forget this woman telling me when I asked about her power situation (after a storm) that she hadn’t noticed the power outage because she doesn’t have power and hadn’t for some time. They used a wood stove.

Yes, that is in the US (Oklahoma).

Also fucked up, The indigenous hospital didn’t have air conditioning. They used box fans.

That whole experience was soul sucking, I lasted like 8 months.
