Doomed love affair. She (Vespucci) was 32, Independence only 3 years old - and wouldn't see the end of the century.
AFAIK, The Amerigo Vespucci is still in service at 87 90.

My dad worked as an engineer in the Swedish navy, he befriended the engineer on the Amerigo Vespucci and got a memento from him, a metallic armband used by the sailor in charge of guard duty aboard. I still have it on my shelf, a beautiful piece.
