I went to this gun buy back scheme. We watched my friend’s shot gun be destroyed. We then went shopping for a shotgun which was compliance with the law with the buy back money. He basically exchanged a pump action shot gun for a double barreled shotgun.
It wasn't quite "Australia's reply". It was mandatory, but did have quite a bit of support. It was spearheaded by the federal government, not by the people as a "reply to the government"
