My 14 year old taped up a little activity list at the beginning of the pandmic, I guess ideas of how to keep busy and stay sane. The very last one was an affirmation: You're doing the best you can!
It's hanging on the inside of a shelf next to the bottom bunk of her bunk bed, so it had been there for probably six months before I noticed it. (I did tell her I knew about it because I immediately went to give her hugs and tell her how awesome she is.)
My son was about 9-10 and couldn’t reach his top bunk to make it so I used to do it in the morning. One morning I see little brown spots-of course my brain went where your brains are all going-but then I noticed he’d dropped a few chocolate chips. Apparently he’d been getting up in the middle of the night and having a few. I didn’t say a word, just made the bed, but would find a few now and then because he never realized he was dropping a few each time. Years later in college he says to me his he used to eat ch chips at night in bed after i was asleep. I started laughing and told him, yeah, I know. We both had a good laugh and made a great memory!

That’s a solid parent and a smart kid. We all could look back from time to time and see a “job well done” and feel good about ourselves.
