I mean, if the United States hadn’t forcibly removed a democratically elected socialist leader (simply on the grounds of him being socialist) and installed the Shah as leader, it’s possibly the whole Iranian Revolution could have been avoided, and prevented a mob of religious zealots from controlling a powerful nation. But long term thinking never really seemed that prevalent in American foreign policy decision
