The government expanded the free lunch and breakfast program during COVID. The GOVERNMENT may have always been able to, but schools didn't have the funding before.

My parents would usually give me 50 dollars every month to cover my lunch bill. One time when I was in freshman year of high school, I had just given my money to the school two days before, and they were already telling me that I owed them money again. I asked them to show me my purchase history to prove that they were telling the truth. And the school refused to show me how much money was used. They claimed that it was a breach of privacy. They said I couldn't get the food I wanted because I owed money, and instead, they took my food away, and threw it out. Perfectly good food. And they just gave me 2 fucking fruit cups. That's it. Nothing else. After that, I brought my lunch to school, until senior year, when I was allowed to leave the school, and get my own lunch from wherever I wanted. I believe to this day that they were trying to get money from gullible students and parents.

wow hearing some of these stories is terrible, lunch ladies all throughout my school experience k-11 have almost always been so sweet and allowed students to get food even if they didnt have money and told us to just pay the debt when we could. never have i had my food thrown away if i didn’t have money
